Position: Opportunities Exist for Machine Learning in Magnetic Fusion EnergyICML Oral

A position paper written with Lucas Spangher and Allen Wang, presented as an oral at ICML 2024 (under 2% of submissions). The argument is aimed at machine learning researchers rather than plasma physicists: magnetic fusion has large, structured, well-instrumented datasets and a set of open problems that map cleanly onto current ML methods, and the field is unusually open to outside collaborators.
